The last and deciding vote cast to pass women's suffrage in the United States in 1920 was that of Tennessee legislator Harry Burn. Although he was initially opposed to the amendment, his mother had told him vote in favour and so he did. After the vote he was accused of bribery, so he entered a personal statement in the records, which included the sentence "I knew that a mother's advice is always safest for a boy to follow and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification;" |
