Friday 06 Mar 2020: Origin of quarantine |
The word quarantine derives from the Venetian dialect version of the Italian "quarenta giorni", meaning 40 days. In the 14th century, ships wanting to enter the city of Ragusa (nowadays called Dubrovnik), which was under Venetian rule, had to be isolated for 30 days to prevent plague epidemics. This period was later extended to 40 days. |
