The first country-specific top-level internet domain was .nl for The Netherlands, which was registered on 25 April 1986 by Piet Beertema, an employee of the CWI (Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica) in Amsterdam. The first .nl domain name was registered a few days later on 1 May 1986:
